Course Objective

To spread awareness about inclusion and inclusive education and how to include children with diverse needs in mainstream schools. The specific area that it focuses on is inclusive education. It will involve 2 online training sessions of 2.5 hours each.

Course Outcomes

  • To build a community of educators, who believe in creating an inclusive society and developing inclusive programs to support children with diverse needs in a school context.
  • To know the key principles, values and benefits of inclusion and develop inclusive education.
  • To recognize the differences that exist and the difficulties which children may experience and support them with general inclusive instructional techniques which may benefit all children by improving the overall quality of teaching in a classroom

Pre-requisites

The sessions are meant for educators, teachers and/or professionals working with children in schools or in the space of education. The sessions will be facilitated bilingually in English and Hindi.

Expected Commitment

5 hours (2 sessions of 2.5 hours each)

Course Details:

Teaching and facilitation during the program will be done using adult learning principles through presentations, working together in small group activities and through case-based discussions. Each training is 2.5 hours long and will happen online

Session 1: Overview to Inclusion and Inclusive education
To explore and understand the concept of inclusion with respect to children with diverse needs within the school system.
Session 2: One of the two topics listed below will be covered in Session after consultation with the cohort.
a. Understanding and responding to diverse needs of students: To recognize the diverse needs of children in the classroom and identify some ways of supporting children and providing them with developmentally appropriate opportunities.
OR
b. Understanding and responding to challenging behaviours in the classroom: To be able to recognize and respond to behaviours of concern within a classroom and why they occur.

About The Resource Organization

Ummeed, meaning ‘hope’, was founded in 2001 by Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy, a developmental pediatrician, as a not-for- profit organization, with the vision of helping children with and at-risk of developmental disabilities reach their full potential and be included in society. For more than two decades, Ummeed has, through its “family-centered approach”, been providing direct and indirect services to enable the participation, empowerment, and inclusion of children with developmental disabilities and their families in the home, school, and community. Ummeed’s programs include clinical services, training and capacity building initiatives, awareness-advocacy efforts, and research.

Deepti believes that schools should be a place where ALL children feel safe, happy and are able to learn at their pace so that they reach their maximum potential and are able to make the best choices for themselves. For the past 10 years, she has been on a journey in the education sector where she has taught children in a govt. school as a Teach for India fellow, has coached and mentored school leaders and teachers to work towards improved leadership and teaching-learning practices so that all children learn. Currently, she works as an Associate Director with the School Services at Ummeed Child Development Center, Mumbai. Her aim is to bring in sustainable changes in the education system to make schools more inclusive and focused on the wellbeing of children. Deepti has done her Masters in business administration and prior to joining the education sector, worked in the corporate sector for more than 4 years.

Seema is committed to fostering safe and inclusive teaching and learning environments for students and teachers alike. Seema's work centres on strengthening teacher education programs, supporting diverse learners, and implementing whole-school approaches for inclusion of children with disabilities. She is currently an Associate Director of School Services at Ummeed Child Development Center in Mumbai, India. With a background in developmental psychology, inclusive education and research, she leverages her experience to drive systemic change and empower all stakeholders in the education system. Seema holds a doctoral degree in Education with a specialisation in Inclusive Education, and an MPhil in Social and Developmental Psychology from the University of Cambridge, UK.

Preeti Baghel is a Trainer with the School Services team at the Ummeed child development center. As a part of her work, she trains educators, caregivers, and students on how to create inclusive educational spaces. She is one of the co-founders of The Shor (The Shor is a poetry collective) . Preeti is also one of the board members for The Akanksha Foundation. Preeti is a part of Narrative Practice India( NPI) and supports them as a faculty. In her free time, she enjoys watching kdramas/ kpop content, drawing, dancing, exploring new places, food and learning new things. She wishes to create more safe spaces for everyone to be able to express themselves the way they wish to.

Joyeeta's passion lies in working with children with different developmental disabilities and their families. She plays a key role in creating and delivering training for all stakeholders to enable children with diverse needs in the mainstream school system reach their maximum potential. Currently she works as a Senior Project Lead and Special Educator with the School Services team at Ummeed Child Development Center. She holds a Masters Degree in Special Education, Columbia University with Specialization in Reading and Writing and an additional Masters Degree in Child Psychology from University of Kolkata.
