About This Course

Course Objectives

  • To explore foundational questions (e.g., "How do children leam?") and explore principles that support children's leaming;
  • To expose the participants to the teaching-learning-assessment approach (based on play, art and dialogue) followed by Khelghar at their community centres;
  • To help the participants experience joyful learning in a safe, nurturing and free environment and learn how to create such an environment;
  • To explore useful practices (especially related to language, mathematics and life-skills) of working with children from underserved communities.

Course Outcomes

  • Participants will leam the basic concepts related to teaching and learning.
  • Participants will receive exposure to values, approaches and activities essential for joyful learning.
  • Participants will learn and apply the methods of teaching language, mathematics and life-skills in their respective workplaces.

Pre-requisites

Staff members of CSOs involved in education of children from underserved backgrounds through community learning centres will benefit the most from this course. It is recommended that 2-3 members from an organization participate together in the workshop, such that there is at least one person from the leadership team. It is recommended that the participants have completed their higher secondary certification or equivalent education.

Expected Commitment

  • Ten (10) days of face-to-face engagement (excluding travel) for the two residential workshops.
  • Five (5) sessions of 2-hours long online engagement for virtual sessions, mentoring, peer-learning, etc.
  • Five (5) sessions of 1.5 hours of direct engagements with children for the ALP (Action Learning Project), to be undertaken mid-course.
  • Offline engagement of 2-4 days for preparations, readings and assignments, etc.

Course Details

Khelghar methodology is based on experiential learning with major emphasis on play, arts and communication/dialogue. The emphasis is on developing children’s learning abilities and life skills. Khelghar has developed an integrated approach of teaching-learning. The course covers activity-based teaching of academic subjects. Innovative methods and approaches to evaluation are also covered in this course. The course is designed keeping Khelghar’s handbook ‘Towards joyful learning’ in the backdrop.

The course has three main components:

Apart from these three components, there will be regular virtual touchpoints and sessions with the resource persons and the assigned organizabon mentors The relevant details will be decided in consultation with the participants and will be announced in advance.

About The Resource Organization

Palakneeti Pariwar has been working with children from underserved communities in Laxminagar, Kothrud through the Khelghar project for more than two decades. Khelghar dreams of a society where all our children get a caring and enabling environment to blossom. Building on the work and experience of Khelghar, the organization has been systematically sharing their learning with other interested individuals, groups and organizations. Since 2008, Khelghar has been conducting workshops on Khelghar methodology. Till now 55 such community learning centres (Khelghars) have been established.

Shubhada Joshi

Shubhada Joshi

Shubhada Joshi, founder of Khelghar and a trustee of Palakneeti Pariwar, pioneered the development of the Khelghar concept, that is, towards joyful learning. She has extensive experience in supporting organisations in their journey towards building the community centers based on Joyful learning methodology and helping people work on their communication skills, life skills, awareness, language and learning abilities.

Sumitra Marathe

Sumitra Marathe

Sumitra Marathe, an engineer by education, has been associated with Khelghar since 2007. She led the team that designed and developed the methodology for mathematics and science teaching in Khelghar She has also designed an evaluation system for Khelghar.

Jyoti Kudale

Jyoti Kudale

Jyoti Kudale is a trained social worker with an MSW degree. She has been associated with Khelghar for the last 15 years. She has worked with adolescent children, high school students and youth groups of Khelghar for 10 years She has extensive experience in training on communication, life skills language.

Sushama Yardi

Sushama Yardi

Sushama Yardi has been associated with Khelghar for the last 20 years. She is the coordinator for math and science activities. She has put in tremendous efforts to develop and improve Khelghar methods for teaching math and science.

Vipula Abhyankar

Vipula Abhyankar

Vipula Abhyankar a retired professor of Physics. She has conducted over 100 mathematics workshops for primary, upper primary and secondary teachers all over India in villages, tribal areas, and in cities She is part of an advisory committee of curriculum development at NCERT She has been associated with Khelghar for the last seven (7) years.

Manasee Mahajan

Manasee Mahajan

Manasee Mahajan loves spinning stories for adults and children alike. She is working on bringing stories to classrooms to make academic learning an intrinsic and enjoyable process. She also works in the space of emergent literacy, and library practices in language learning.

Sandhya Phadke

Sandhya Phadke

Sandhya Phadke has been associated with Khelghar for the last 20 years. She is a part of the organization's mathematics and science teams. She is also involved in various movements to resolve issues of women and families.

Radha joshi

Radha joshi

Radha is a trained Dance Movement Psychotherapist. She has also done her MA in Education from Azim Premji University. She currently works in Khelghar as a 'Student and Teacher Well-being Head'. She also runs her own project 'Roots And Branches', which focuses on children's well-being, using the creative arts in education.
