Course Objective

The course looks at the learning processes in the primary classes focusing on the teaching of mathematics. The objective is to understand the processes by which learning can be made meaningful.
This is expected to lead to an understanding about how to:
  • choose and conduct activities that are meaningful for children and develop foundational number sense and multiplicative number sense;
  • to integrate stories, counting, writing and communicating about quantitative changes to lay a strong basis for mathematics;
  • plan the progression of activities based on assessments of children’s current understanding.

Prerequisites and candidate profiles:

These workshops are designed for organizations that have direct engagement and are committed to trying out the activities with children. We usually request at least one person from the core/leadership team to participate. We also appreciate if the same participants can continue throughout the project period.

Course Details:

Phase 1: 4-days residential workshop in Delhi
  • Understanding an activity-based approach to mathematics
  • Developing learning procedures or developing number sense - when, where and how
  • Sharing core activities for developing foundational number sense
  • Using literacy and numeracy to communicate ideas - natural spaces for integration
  • Observing a class for all the three phases
Phase 2: 4-days residential workshop in Delhi
  • Sharing of meaningful activities created over years for developing conceptual understanding on additive and multiplicative thinking
  • Reflections and discussions on classroom videos
  • Observation of classes and understanding assessment processes as integral process of classroom practices
  • Sharing trajectories (flow) to understand the development of concepts like fractions
  • Observing a class for all the three phases
Phase 3: 4-days residential workshop in Delhi
  • Developing a perspective on assessment and understanding its purpose
  • Sharing activities for geometry and measurement
  • Reflections and discussions on classroom videos
  • Observation of classes and understanding assessment processes as integral part of classroom practice
  • Intervention in different areas of education - contextualization
  • Making plans for each participant according to their situations

About The Resource Organization

Jodo Gyan is a nonprofit social enterprise working to bring about changes in actual classroom practices, especially in mathematics. Testimonials

Sushama Bhujbal, Khelghar, Palakniti Pariwar
“Children should be curious about learning, and they learn through their experiences. We just have to give them ample time. In primary (grades) if we teach any concept through a story, children understand it better. This was a new perspective for me. The learning environment was open and friendly. All primary teachers and volunteers who work with primary children should do this course. This way of teaching will make a firm base for math and children will enjoy it for sure.”

P. Venkataramana, Kidpower
"All the participants were involved in activities, and we experienced every concept practically. I feel Jodogyan’s math (teaching) methodology is a dream for every student. Jodogyan approach is (stemming) from need to do. Students can learn math concepts in/with their daily life situations. Using this methodology, I learnt how math can be taught with games and stories."
